Procedure and apparatus for drying grain crops during storage by circulating air and for preserving their quality by airing

Advantages of using the EcoDryer procedure:

On the basis of the information gained by operational and economical comparison the EcoDryer procedure offers the following advantages.

Advantages in quality preservation:

Damage to grain crops caused by heat which occurs during traditional drying procedures can be eliminated:

In traditional drying devices the drying process is carried out in a short time and at high temperatures, while the EcoDryer method dries grain crops more slowly using air of a lower temperature ensuring that damage caused by heat is eliminated.

It facilitates the after-ripening of grain crops:

At the time of harvest the ripening of grain crops is normally still in progress. The EcoDryer method dries grain crops over a long period of time (even as long as 3-5 weeks) utilising continuously flowing climatized air. Such conditions are highly favourable concerning the after-ripening of grain crops to ensure the completion of the ripening process.

It keeps the temperature and moisture content of grain crops at the required level:

Throughout the storage of grain crops different temperature and moisture content values must be maintained during the drying process and during the so called quality preservation storage phase which follows the stage during which the required moisture content (e.g. 13%) is reached up until distribution. The EcoDryer apparatus ensures that the temperature and vapour (moisture) content of the environment is suitable for the momentary condition of the grain crops either manually or automatically while connected to a control system.

The formation of damaging heat centres during storage can be avoided

Due to continuous airing with the use of climatized air grain crops do not heat up, thus the formation of heat centres is avoided. Consequently, the quality of the product is preserved and the possibility of self-combustion is eliminated.

The climatized air reduces the possibility of insect proliferation:

After the completion of the drying process the temperature and vapour content of the ventilating air is set at a level which reduces the viability and reproductive ability of insects.

The climatized air reduces risk of fungal infection:

Similarly to the protection against insects after the completion of the drying process using air of a required temperature and vapour content reduces the viability and reproductive ability of fungi.

Advantages resulting in cost reduction:

It can be fitted into the ground-plan of the given storage facility:

The climatized drying and ventilating air insuflated with the help of the EcoDryer apparatus, which is connected to the perforated airing tunnels placed under the grain heaps, is removed from the storage facility with the help of extractors. These airing tunnels are constructed from 80-centimetre-long segments, thus the airing tunnel system easily fits into the ground plan of the given storage facility. In the case of silos with airing platforms, using the device is even simpler, the device is fitted to the input outlet of the silo's airing platform system with the help of purpose built connecting pipes, while the extractors are placed onto the dome of the silos, and the apparatus is ready to be used. N.B.: When installing the device, it is essential to remember the importance of having extractors! The air output of the extractors has to be set so that for every 1,000 tonnes of grain crops the output of the extractors is 14,000-16,000 m3/h operating on -2,000 Pa extraction pressure.

ithout the extractors the apparatus will not work satisfactorily!

The material, production equipment and man-hour demands of the procedure are extremely low:

In flathouses the airing tunnels of the already installed apparatus can be assembled by 2 people in 2-3 hours using simple tools without any special knowledge. In silos this procedure is not necessary.

Easy to move, install and remove:

The apparatus is completely movable, so only minor architectural alterations are necessary in the given flathouses for it to be installed and operated. (installation of pressure and extracting connecting pipes)

Only 400 VAC line voltage is needed for installation:

Only thriphase electric mains and plug points with 63 amp load current are needed for the apparatus to operate.

Drying can commence even in a partially full storage facility while grain crops are being put in storage:

In flathouses the airing tunnels of the apparatus are easy to assemble, thus when putting grain crops in storage the length of airing tunnels that need to be assembled corresponds to the amount of grain to be dried. This way drying may be done continuously whilst grain crops are being put in storage reducing the overall drying time and energy costs. In the case of silos, this procedure is not necessary.

While emptying the storage facility mobile loading machines may be used:

Just as when grain crops are being put in storage during emptying the storage facility airing tunnels which have become unnecessary can easily be removed allowing for the use of traditional mobile loading machines. In the case of silos, this procedure is not necessary.

Operational parameters may be set manually or automatically:

The apparatus may be controlled manually or automatically. When controlled manually temperature and moisture content end values may be set on the control panel of the device. In the case of automatic control, parameters are set by the device with the help of a purpose-built computer, which controls the device accordingly.

Insect disinfection by gas is simplified, made more effective and less expensive:

Gas used for insect disinfection is directed inside the heap of grain crops with the ventilating air, which increases its efficiency a lot more than in the case of directing gas through the surface of the heap. This means less work and gas is needed and it yields better results.

Repeatedly turning over the grain crops periodically becomes unnecessary:

Due to the continuous flow of the drying and ventilating air, crustation does not develop on the surface of the heap, and the inside of the heap does not heat. While gassing stage of necessary insect disinfection, gas flows through the entire cross section of the heap. This makes turning over the heap unnecessary, and reduces the number of broken grains.

The long waiting period while putting the grain crops in storage ceases:

During the extremely busy time of harvest transport vehicles suffer loss in work due to the necessity of queuing and waiting in front of drying devices.

This decrease in work can be eliminated through the utilisation of EcoDryer technology, since grain crops are transferred directly from the transport vehicles to the storage facility or silo.

Advantages in environmental protection:

Environmentally friendly procedure, utilising this method renders the use of polluting and costly traditional drying methods (e.g. using gas or gasoline as fuel) unnecessary:

The EcoDryer procedure is environmentally sound, the equipment used does not emit polluting or damaging substances. As traditional drying methods become unnecessary, the extent of air pollution caused by such devices is directly reduced.
